Description
Description Choline is a vitamin-like nutrient that is considered essential in the diet despite the fact that humans can synthesize small amounts. Choline and its metabolites have a number of vital biological functions including the synthesis of phospholipids and other structural components of cell membranes. Choline is also important for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is essential for heart rhythm control, mental health, memory and many other functions. Recent data has identified special populations in which dietary recommended intakes may not be close to optimal. Specifically, women who are pregnant or nursing have the highest demand due to fetal and infant cognitive development. Additionally, post-menopausal women and those with folate metabolism polymorphisms require higher intake. Vegans and those who dont eat eggs are at risk for inadequate intake.
