Black Rice got it's name "forbidden rice" as it was once reserved for the Chinese emperor to ensure his health and longevity. Black rice was forbidden to everyone else. Black rice contains Flavanoids - organic compounds found in plants. Black rice is rich in anthocyanins which are antioxidant pigments that give the rice its unusual color. It's purplish black color is as result of it's high concentration of anthocyanin.
