Description
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for nervous system function as it is needed to produce myelin, the fatty substance that forms a protective sheath around nerves. It also helps with energy production, and for the synthesis of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal-source foods. Vitamin B12 supplementation is recommended for vegetarians and those suffering from Vitamin B12 deficiency. Recent studies have found that people with high levels of Vitamin B12 in their blood have lower levels of homocysteine that is linked to an increased risk of memory loss and those having low levels of four of five markers for Vitamin B12 may also be more likely to develop cognitive decline (1,2).
