The beans used for our organic cacao powder are grown in the Peruvian amazon, the spiritual home of cacao. Our cacao is at least 75% organic raw Criollo cacao beans, prized for their superior flavour. Our cacao products are not roasted or Dutch processed (alkalized), making them raw. Cacao is a superfood in its own right, packed full of nutrients and antioxidants. As well as being suitable for drinking and baking, our cacao is ideal for making chocolate. As with any pure cacao, it has a naturally bitter taste and may need a sweetener. None of our cacao products contain any additives or preservatives. This is 100% cacao, nothing added, nothing taken away! Our entire cacao range is UTZ certified a programme similar to Fair Trade that specialises in securing a fair deal for cocoa, coffee and tea growers across the globe. Cacao and Peru have a long history together, with the fruit and its beans having been enjoyed by natives long before it was exported worldwide. Cacao has a few different varieties; however, the Criollo variety is growing rapidly in popularity due to its higher quality resulting from greater fat content. Exquisite Peruvian cacao is well suited to agroforestry systems, which have less environmental impact compared to plantations in West Africa where it is typically grown in direct sunlight with fertilisers. This has led to substantial deforestation and makes Peruvian cacao a more sustainable option. Almost all of Peru s cacao is grown by small holders who rely on cacao s weekly harvest (April - September) as their main source of income. Their crop is then sold to cooperatives who act as intermediaries; the cacao is then processed in Peru before being trucked to Lima and exported to the UK where we lovingly package it before sending it to you.
