Description
Indian sasparila (Hemidesmus indicus) is a slender, shrubby plant whose roots have been used in beverages as well as medicinally in Ayurvedic medicine for nearly a thousand years. The roots have been called the "symbols of human mind on the earth" as they look similar to neurons, and have been said to support a calm mind in meditation. Although both Indian sarsaparilla and Mexican or Jamaican sarsaparilla (Smilax medica or Smilax ornata) have similar flavors, they contain different beneficial compounds and should be distinguished.* Indian sarsaparilla can be made into homemade root beer or drank as a sasparilla loose tea.*
